Chinese Government representatives were the Vice-Chairman of Shanghai People\u2019s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Mr. Li Yiping, (\u674e\u9038\u5e73), Vice Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Shanghai Municipal People\u2019s Congress (SMPC), Mr. Tian Chunhua (\u7530\u6625\u534e), Vice Chair of the Committee for Handing Proposals of Shanghai CPPCC, Mrs. Su Rongjuan (\u82cf\u84c9\u5a1f) and Deputy Director of Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office, Mr. Fu Jihong (\u5085\u7ee7\u7ea2).<\/p>\n

Ambassador Rokanas pointed out the good bilateral relations that connect the two historic countries while Consul General Xiros presented an overview of the important developments which took place during the last year in Shanghai.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Historical Facts: 25th<\/sup> of March 1821\u00a0<\/u>Greek<\/u> Independence<\/u> Day<\/u><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/em>Freedom <\/em>or <\/em>Death\u201d<\/em> (\u0395\u03bb\u03b5\u03c5\u03b8\u03b5\u03c1\u03af\u03b1 <\/em>\u03ae <\/em>\u0398\u03ac\u03bd\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/em>)<\/p>\n

These are the words that come in the mind of every Greek in the sound of this date. Every year on the 25th<\/sup> of March, Greeks and Cypriots around the world honour and celebrate Greek Independence Day, commemorating the start of the Greek War of Independence in 1821 against the Ottoman rule, which lasted nearly 400 years.<\/p>\n

Greece had been part of the Ottoman Empire since\u00a0 the fall of Constantinople in 1453. With hostilities having started two months earlier, the Greek revolt was precipitated on March 25, 1821, when Bishop Germanos of Patras (\u03a0\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03b9\u03ce\u03bd \u03a0\u03b1\u03c4\u03c1\u03ce\u03bd \u0393\u03b5\u03c1\u03bc\u03b1\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2) raised the Greek flag of revolution over the Monastery of Agia Lavra in the Peloponnese and the cry \u201cFreedom or Death<\/em>\u201d became the motto of the revolution.<\/p>\n

The outcome of the long and bloody struggle for freedom (1821 \u2013 1830) was the establishment of an independent Greek state that continues to stand to this day, making thus March 25th<\/sup> the most important date in the history of Modern Greece.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
